Dental Inlays And Onlays
General Dentistry
Dental inlays and onlays are used when old fillings need to be removed or replaced. A dental inlay is similar to a filling and fits inside the tooth. A dental onlay is more extensive and extends over the cusps of the treated tooth.
There are many other names for inlay and onlays like: Conservative Crown & partial crown.
Inlay and Onlays are the most conservative way to restore previously filled teeth.
This method conserves the intact tooth structure and walls of the tooth and replaces the undermined and damaged portion of the tooth.
Porcelain ceramics are used to fabricate inlays and Onlays and will deliver cosmetic and durable restoration that duplicates natural tooth structure.
The porcelain piece is fabricated in the dental laboratory and is glued (cemented) to the tooth structure using a reinforced resin cement. After cementation it becomes part of tooth structure. The bond is so strong that in order to remove, it has be drilled though like natural teeth.
Steps for Dental Inlays And Onlaysprocedure:
Remove the cavity and /or the old filling
Take an impression /mold of the tooth for the lab
Place a temporary to protect the tooth while the lab is fabricating the porcelain piece
Cement the inlay.
In most cases it is done in two appointments.
